New Students

  • Please arrive approximately ten minutes prior to the start of class to sign in, have an Experience Manager show you around the studio, and get settled on your mat. We have mats and props for purchase, as well as cubbies to store your belongings. Shoes and phones are not allowed in the yoga room, but your smiles and willingness to learn are more than welcome!

    Especially as seasons change, please make sure to keep your mat clean, towels washed, and remain mindful of the various smells you may bring into the space — personal body odor, perfumes, colognes, etc.

    Savasana is important. Please stay for this pose; it helps decrease your stress levels from day-to-day and relaxes the body. If you cannot stay for the entirety of class, please let the instructor know beforehand so they can help you leave quietly.

    After class, be sure to wipe down the area around your mat. It helps ensure that you and all of your yogi friends stay safe and comfortable in class.

    Classes in Royal Oak do fill up, so we encourage pre-registration. Class is waitlisted? Join the waitlist, it moves, we promise. You’ll get a text or email when you make it into class.

  • If you are registered for a class, but will not be able to make it, please cancel your reservation before class time. Our classes do fill up frequently, and we want to ensure there is space for everyone who arrives to practice. Reservations may be cancelled online through the website or app, or by calling or texting the studio.

    Royal Oak Studio only: In-studio reservations that are not cancelled at least 2 hours prior to class time are subject to a $5 Late Cancel/No Show Fee. Please refer to our class cancellation policy in the next section.

  • Yes! Rental mats are $4. We sterilize after each use.

  • With the exception of Breath + Basics and Yin, our studio is heated to about 75-80 degrees Fahrenheit. Class titled with “Heated” will be around 95 degrees.

    A warm space facilitates a more open body, especially during the winter months. The climate of the class is entirely controlled by the teacher, so if you are ever too hot or too cold please let your instructor know and they can make adjustments.

  • Start with the New Student Special 5 for $25, and try to make it to a variety of class types led by different teachers. Our teachers and classes are diverse, but share an undercurrent of integrity. We are not cookie cutter.

    After you finish the New Student Special you should base your purchase on how often you practice. If you practice once a week we recommend any of the class packages — 10, 15, or 25. Keep in mind, the more classes you purchase at one time, the cheaper the cost per class.

    If you plan on practicing two or more times per week a membership would be the best option.

  • We have showers and changing rooms at all studios. Bloomfield has one shower, Detroit has three showers, and Royal Oak has one shower. Each is stocked with shampoo and conditioner. Feel free to stay after your shower and get ready in our community vanity areas.

    • Royal Oak - Metered street parking is available on Washington. Get two hours of free parking in any Royal Oak parking garage. The closest being the garage directly behind the studio on Lafayette Street.

    • Bloomfield - Free parking in our building’s private lot.

    • Detroit - We offer 3 hours of validated parking in the Z Park garage adjacent to the studio. Entrances on Gratiot Ave. or Grand River Ave. Scan the code at the studio front desk to validate. Metered street parking is also available on Library Street.

 Online Live Classes

  • To sign up for an online class, visit the schedule where the class is bing held, either on the website or the Citizen Yoga app. . Online classes will be listed as “Livestream”.

  • Look for a quiet, private space to roll out your mat. We recommend having 2 blocks and a strap easily within reach. If you don’t have yoga props, you can purchase them next time you’re at one of our studios.

    Livetream class link will be emailed to you an hour before class. If you do not get the link in your email or spam, please contact the studio to resend the link.

    We highly recommend practicing with a set of Bluetooth headphones to help tune out any outside distractions. Your teacher will share the class playlist in the Zoom chat, so you’re welcome to flow to your teacher’s playlist or select your own music.

  • Yes! Citizen Yoga class passes, Community, and FoundersPlus+ memberships can be used for in-studio, online live (Zoom), and outdoor classes. There are some special class passes that do not apply to in-studio classes, but the title of the class pass will explicitly state that if that is the case.

  • Conversation is a great way to break the awkwardness that can come with taking any class. This is especially true since we’ve gone online! Feel free to un-mute yourself and SAY HELLO to people you know and introduce yourself to someone new. The teacher will mute everyone when it’s time to start class.

    You will also receive a link to the teacher’s playlist once you are in the Zoom meeting. You can play the playlist in the background while the teacher is teaching class. You’ll be able to control the volume of the playlist separately.

    Turn on your video! Citizen teachers offer alignment-based cues, so if we can see you, we can provide verbal assists to help you deepen your practice. If you’re not feeling video, no problem at all. You can still have a great practice with all the anonymity you want!

  • Registered students will be emailed an individualized Zoom link approximately one hour before class begins. Add “info@citizenyogastudio.com” to your email contacts to make sure these emails don’t land in your spam folder. If you do not receive an email with the link for class, please reach out to info@citizenyogastudio.com or text our help line at (248) 607-6761.

Policies

  • At our Royal Oak Studio, in-studio and outdoor classes must be cancelled at least 2 hours in advance of the class start time to avoid the $5 Late Cancel/No Show Fee (unlimited and members) or the deduction of the class from your package. To avoid this fee, cancel your registration using the website or app, or call or text the studio at least 2 hours prior to class.

    At this time, we do not enforce a cancellation policy for classes at our Bloomfield or Detroit studios, or for online classes. The Experience Managers at the front desk will early cancel your reservation for these classes when they notice that you are not present. You will not be charged a fee and your class passes will not be affected.

    For our busiest holidays, such as Thanksgiving and New Years Day, cancellations must be made 12 hours in advance to avoid the $5 Late Cancel/No Show Fee.

  • We only offer one sale package per person. If you have already made the purchase we can return the additional package as a credit to your account.

  • All packages and memberships are non-refundable. Workshops require 24 hours notice to cancel for credit otherwise the workshop is non-refundable. Retail items may be exchanged for store credit to be used toward other retail purchases only.

  • Class passes cannot be shared. However, if you enroll in our FoundersPlus+ monthly membership, you receive two guest passes a month.

    1. Find and book the class you’d like to attend.

    2. On the "You're Booked!" confirmation page, tap Add a Guest.

    3. Enter your guest’s first name, last name, and email address.

    4. Choose how to cover the guest booking:

      • Use a drop-in rate and pay directly

      • Apply a guest pass if your plan includes one

    5. Tap Add Guest — you're all set!

    🎟️ If you have guest passes available, one will be automatically applied.

  • We’re sorry to see you go! Email info@citizenyogastudio.com or talk to an Experience Manager at the front desk to submit your cancellation form.

  • All Citizen Yoga packages are universal unless specified otherwise. We do offer studio specific packages in Detroit, so please read the description of the package prior to purchasing. We are here to support you in finding the perfect package for your practice. Please ask for advice if you are unsure about what would suit your needs best, or see the FAQ answer above!

  • Yes, memberships can be put on hold for up to two months for any reason at any time one time per year, per person. If you are injured or sick and require a longer hold period we will ask for a doctor’s note.

    Packages can only be put on temporary hold in the case of an injury.

    To put your membership or package on hold, please discuss with a Experience Manager at the front desk.

Account Management

  • Log in to your account and visit “My Info”. You can also always ask the Experience Manager at the front desk or over the phone to check for the number of classes you have on your account, as well as their expiration date.

  • All regularly-priced class passes expire one year after date of purchase. The New Student Special 5 for $25 expires one month after the date of first use. Sale packages typically have much shorter, strict expiration dates — that is why we are able to offer them at such great prices! Please note the expiration date on your receipt.

  • You can change your billing information at the studio or over the phone with one of our Experience Managers at the front desk, or online through your MindBody account under “Payment” within “My Info".

  • Easy fix! Experience Managers will take care of it for you in-studio. Please bring this to their attention the next time you come to practice! To avoid this issue, it is helpful if you specify what package you would like for us to pull from on the sign in sheet each time you attend.

General

  • We have researched and experimented with several different class times and styles at each location so that we can best meet our students’ needs. That being said, we are always open to feedback! Please direct such suggestions to an Experience Manager at the front desk or email info@citizenyogastudio.com.

  • Visit our homepage to add your email address to our mailing list. Our emails are sent out 1-2 times per week to inform you about package specials, events, workshops and winners of all our awesome giveaways!

  • You can join our text messaging program by texting "SUBSCRIBE" to 248-297-6432 or Sign Up Online . You can unsubscribe at any time. We never sell or misuse your personal information. Text messages will be limited to a maximum of 4 per month.

  • Yes, we give 10% off all regularly-priced packages to students, seniors, military, City of Royal Oak employees, and City of Detroit employees. This does not apply to sale packages, memberships, or Detroit-only packages.

  • We provide fun, reliable childcare while you practice yoga! A single drop-in is $7, or you can purchase 10 passes for $50. Kids Care is available for children ages 1-12. Founders receive 2 Kids Care or guest passes with their membership each month.

  • Private sessions can be taught onsite or in-studio as long as studio privates do not overlap with any of our regularly-scheduled class times. It is a flat rate of $150 with no minimum number of participants required. The Detroit studio can hold up to 60 people and the Royal Oak studio can accommodate up to 47. We do our best to coordinate with your choice of instructor, and tailor the class per your request.

  • Schedule directly with the wellness practitioner. Check the Acupuncture or Massage pages for their contact info.

  • Most of our instructors are on Spotify. Feel free to browse for them by name and then choose the playlists you would like to follow.

  • CY is always happy to donate class passes! Please send a formal donation request letter on your association’s letterhead, any forms required, and tax information if applicable to info@citizenyogastudio.com. Please specify if you’d like to pick up your donation or have it mailed.

  • Yes! However, we are not responsible for what is left at the studio. We hold found items for up to two weeks. If you want to confirm your items are in the lost and found, please call the studio and ask the Experience Manager at the front desk to check for you. If valuable items like credit cards, keys, or jewelry are found, they are held behind the desk, where the Experience Manager will return them to you. If you leave your mat, we will hold onto it for one month. After one month, we donate all mats to Mats for Mutts.
