Day 1: Setting an Intention
Mental Health Pillar: Mindfulness
by Ann Fancy, Citizen Yoga Teacher
Intention is my way of pausing to recalibrate, to reconnect to my inner compass. It’s not about perfection or rigidly adhering to a plan; it’s about bringing mindful awareness to how I show up in the world. Each intention is a small, deliberate act of self-honor and a quiet, persistent course correction back to the authentic life I’m meant to live
Intention setting lies at the heart of my spiritual life, both on and off the mat. It’s a practice that helps me navigate my soul’s map, staying aligned with my core values and deepest truths. Like our ancestors who charted their course by the stars, I rely on my intentions as a compass.
I once learned that even a small deviation in a sailor’s course—just a degree or two—could lead them to an entirely unintended continent if uncorrected over time. That metaphor resonates deeply with me. I’ve had seasons where I drifted so far off course that I lost sight of myself.
For me, setting an intention isn’t about achieving external goals. It’s about living with integrity and staying true to the essence of who I am. It’s a gentle yet powerful reminder to check in: Am I living in alignment with my values? Am I honoring the truest version of myself today? How can I continue to recalibrate and honor my soul, one breath, one hour, one day at a time?
Today, set an intention for the You Matter Challenge. Write it down (we’ll have space for you to do this in-studio!) and share it in the comments below to help inspire others in the challenge.
