Mobilize

When we hear the word “mobility” in the yoga space, it’s generally referring to the body moving freely and easily.

From Harvard Health: “Mobility is defined as your ability to move purposefully as you go through your day. It is the foundation for living a healthy and independent life. Mobility comprises all the skills required for everyday living: physical stamina, strength, balance, coordination, and range of motion. The importance of mobility becomes clear when you rise out of bed, shower, manage a flight of stairs, walk half a mile, get in and out of a car, or carry groceries."

Physical mobility isn’t just about flexibility, it requires strength, stability, and good joint function. The same goes with mental and emotional mobility, we need flexibility, strength and stability. Emotions will fluctuate several times throughout the day, but that doesn’t mean we get swept away or controlled by these emotions. A healthy mind moves between emotions freely and easily, not ruminating on perceived slights or confronting moments.

When we consider mobility at the community level, we think of individuals organizing and engaging in social movements for specific causes or goals. Citizen student and Member of the Michigan Senate, Mallory McMorrow began her career in politics in the wake of the 2016 election. A Royal Oak resident, Mallory channeled her hopeless feelings into creating changes in her community and helping direct others on how they too can get involved.

McMorrow recently published a book self described as: “For anyone who feels helpless, and everyone who is fed up; for those who want to make a real difference but have no idea where to begin—this is a blueprint for the most effective way to fight back, and leave this plane better than we found it.”
